Who we are
We started DiverseITS to fix a problem we kept seeing.
Jackie Chatman started DiverseITS in 2018 while working as an IT Project Manager and Software Engineer at the U.S. Department of State. He kept seeing the same pattern: companies and managers prioritizing short-term results over code quality, engineering standards, and the long-term effect on the people using the systems.
Why we started
Jackie also worked alongside contracted engineers who focused only on the task or ticket in front of them — without asking whether the bigger business need was actually being met, or helping the customer avoid the same problem next time. After several government furloughs, he had the chance to start an LLC and began contracting independently. That work showed him a broader need: engineers who could rescue struggling projects, improve the quality of the technology underneath them, and make life easier for the businesses and people depending on them. As DiverseITS grew, Jackie met other engineers who shared that mindset and brought them onto the team.
DiverseITS's first client had serious problems in an existing codebase and a deadline that wasn't moving. The work wasn't just fixing what was broken — it meant understanding the system quickly enough to correct the immediate problem while figuring out whether the requested fix would actually hold up. That's still the model DiverseITS works from: a partner in the room who asks questions and investigates the underlying issue, not a developer working through an isolated ticket.
No one knows everything.
The sooner a team accepts that, the sooner it can surround itself with people whose knowledge and experience make everyone stronger. That belief is paired with two habits the team holds onto: don't give up when the work gets hard, and never stop asking why — because the real problem is rarely the first one anyone names, and asking keeps challenging assumptions until the actual answer shows up.

How we work
DiverseITS gives clients three ways to engage — Staff Augmentation, a Managed Pod, or Project Delivery — and the model can change as the work changes, without changing partners. The right shape of engagement depends on what you need, not on which contract is easiest for us to sell.
How the firm behaves
Listen first
Understand the business problem before prescribing technology.
Say what fits
If the work is outside the bench, we say so before the client spends money.
Keep ownership visible
One accountable lead, clear next steps, and practical communication.
Earn the next project
Leave the system supportable and the relationship stronger than it started.
Beyond the software
Jackie's goal for DiverseITS goes beyond delivering good software. He wants engineers who think past their ticket, and clients who see IT professionals as partners rather than vendors who disappear once the invoice is paid. That includes creating room for more Black professionals to enter and grow in software engineering — DiverseITS looks for people willing to learn, work hard, and grow, and tries to build a place where they can do it.
High standards. Low drama. People you can actually reach.
DiverseITS is built around the idea that clients should know who owns the work, understand what happens next, and be able to reach a real person when something matters.
